چکیده

JONES, B., and NEWCOMBE, G. 1999. Associations among parasites of Populus. Can. J. For. Res. 29: 00-000. Two related F2 families of a Populus trichocarpa x P. deltoides hybrid pedigree were examined in the field for the presence of parasites (three fungal pathogens and five arthropod herbivores), during the third and fourth years of tree growth. The null hypothesis of no associations among parasites, was tested using a method suggested by a test for associations among species colonizing islands. In our case, the method was simplified by the fact that we did not place any restrictions on the number of parasites that can infect a given tree (tree ≅ island). A negative association was discovered between Glomerella cingulata and a species of Taphrina, two fungal pathogens, as there were significantly fewer than the expected number of co-occurrences in the third year, and none in the fourth. Another negative fungus-fungus association was evident in the fourth year between Taphrina and Venturia populina. A positive insect-insect association between a Gracillariid leaf miner and Phyllocolpa bozemani, a leaf-folding sawfly, was observed in both years. Another positive association was observed in the fourth year between the fungus Glomerella cingulata, and an eriophyid mite, Schizoempodium mesophyllincola.

Genes for parasite-specific, nonhost resistance in populus.

ABSTRACT Nonhost resistance is hypothesized to protect plants in a nonspecific manner. For highly specialized parasites, this hypothesis applies not only to distantly related plants but also to resistant congeners of the host species. Congeners of Populus spp. were hybridized to create two interspecific hybrid poplar pedigrees (i.e., Populus trichocarpa x P. deltoides and P. trichocarpa x P. ma...

Allelic Interactions among Pto-MIR475b and Its Four Target Genes Potentially Affect Growth and Wood Properties in Populus

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in plant growth and development, but few studies have illuminated the allelic interactions among miRNAs and their targets in perennial plants. Here, we combined analysis of expression patterns and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based association studies to explore the interactions between Pto-MIR475b and its four target genes (Pto-PPR1, Pto-PPR2, Pto-...

Identification and allelic dissection uncover roles of lncRNAs in secondary growth of Populus tomentosa

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) function in various biological processes. However, their roles in secondary growth of plants remain poorly understood. Here, 15,691 lncRNAs were identified from vascular cambium, developing xylem, and mature xylem of Populus tomentosa with high and low biomass using RNA-seq, including 1,994 lncRNAs that were differentially expressed (DE) among the six libraries. 3...

Genetic differentiation, clinal variation and phenotypic associations with growth cessation across the Populus tremula photoperiodic pathway.

Perennial plants monitor seasonal changes through changes in environmental conditions such as the quantity and quality of light. To ensure a correct initiation of critical developmental processes, such as the initiation and cessation of growth, plants have adapted to a spatially variable light regime and genes in the photoperiodic pathway have been implicated as likely sources for these adaptat...

Allelic Variation in a Cellulose Synthase Gene (PtoCesA4) Associated with Growth and Wood Properties in Populus tomentosa

Lignocellulosic biomass from trees provides a renewable feedstock for biofuels, lumber, pulp, paper, and other uses. Dissecting the mechanism underlying natural variation of the complex traits controlling growth and lignocellulose biosynthesis in trees can enable marker-assisted breeding to improve wood quality and yield. Here, we combined linkage disequilibrium (LD)-based association analysis ...
